Set in San Francisco in the early 20th century, the writing style is somewhat detached and journalistic. It was interesting, rather than evocative. The plot lines were complex, and somewhat hard to follow because of the alternating viewpoints of the two detectives. I enjoyed it, but I'm not exactly dying to read the next one.
