maybe laced with 4 or 5 good metaphors, the rest was dogshit. horrifically dehumanising depictions of mental illness, all deaths lack any depth of emotion, a paedophile that gets off without punishment whilst constantly dehumanising her victim??, blatant lesbophobia, every character is obsessed with sex in a way that contradicts and overshadows almost all of their other personality traits.

SADDEST BOOK EVER. I am thinking about it MONTHS later. Difficult read at points and tons of trigger warnings but is very reflective. Main character I found morally ambiguous but Murakami writes it so well that you still find yourself backing him at points.

This started off so good that I expected it to be GREAT. It was the writing style and how it weaved themes and symbols into the text quite poetically that drew me in.
But the further we got the more frustrating and a bit flat the characters seemed, the more the book revolves around sex and how everyone just reeeeally wants to do it with the main character. And while sex is a central theme of the book I just found it a bit sloppily addressed. Where it got really problematic was with the 31 year old woman raping a teenager and the adult being portrayed as the victim...in general the women in the story are pretty weak.

In conclusion: excellent writing, bad story
