How adorable!! I love the parents in this book and the little girl and doggie are so cute. The illustrations are fantastic. I want to run away too. It did remind me of when I ran away with my best friend, we were around 8. We made sandwiches, got chips and drinks, with no lids, and walked to the end of a street where there was a field. We sat and complained about our families and ate our lunch. Then got tired and went back home. So there, this kind of thing has been happening for a long while.

The illustrations are adorable - 4 stars in that department; however the actual story line was a bit...frustrating for me. I'm not sure the mother should have reinforced the fact that just because things weren't going the way the daughter wanted them to meant she could run away (only to the yard) from her problems. I'm all for teaching independence, but just because she ran off didn't mean her problems vanished. Her purple shirt was still dirty, her favorite cereal still gone, and the once clean white shirt is still covered in purple marker. All she really learned was that if she doesn't like how things are going and pitches a fit then she can run outside and hide in her tent and her mom will bring her cookies and still make her favorite dinner.

I truly like the concept of this book and it is clear that it is written with a tinge of childhood nostalgia.
Written wholly in dialog with illustrations representing exactly what is written by the text, I feel that this book needs to do more with fewer words. While the conversion between dad and daughter is entertaining-and it is clear that he is humoring her-less is more, especially when building to a punch line.
Interesting, but not memorable.

I can never get over how beautiful children's books are and how they deliver deep, meaningful stories with just a few words and wonderful expressions.

I received this from a Goodreads giveaway. A lovely story of a dad recounting spending time with his young daughter, recounting her tough day which caused her to run away...to the backyard. A sweet story with beautiful illustrations.

I liked that the parent didn't lose her cool when responding to the child's actions, but I questioned some of the parenting decisions. To each her own. Still, I was left with a negative overall feeling that "running away" was somehow now a fun thing. Couldn't it have changed to family camping or something? Not my favorite.
