Not sure I've ever had much interest in reading this, only I had a specific book I wanted to get to that's inspired by this - Lord of the Flyfest- (as well as some TV shows, films etc that takes inspiration from this classic) and wanted a better appreciation when the time comes.

Reminiscent of Peter Pan and the lost boys and some really good character analysis of humanity as a whole when faced with struggles. How we try to achieve this collective control at all times but quickly fall down to hysteria and paranoia when faced with the unknown.

I felt like this was a really interesting look at life with an island of stranded boys and how they try to survive the wilderness.Ā

I know a lot of this probably went over my head and that reflects in the rating as I didn't understand all the themes, but I'm glad I read this.

I find this book very hard to rate, but I loved it nonetheless.

I read this for an English assignment, and I'm glad I did, as I've been wanting to read this for quite a while.

Admittedly, the start and up to the middle is a bit slow and not that interesting in terms of action, but I still find it very important to get to know the characters and how they go from being just a bit mean to being barbarians. However, the beginning too was far from boring, it was just slower than the second half.

It's appropriate for a very broad audience! Kids, teenagers, adults, and boys and girls. Of course, no book fits for everyone, but I'd recommend for everyone to try and read at least once.

I read this in one evening and oh boy. Its not bad, by any means. Itā€™s a classic for something. But the characters, their actions and the implied message of the author havenā€™t aged well. At all. I hated all of the characters (except one) for the entirety of the book, and the only moment I was finally able to empathize with one its not because they have changed their ways and had a remarkable development, rather because they were in a situation of extreme danger and stress. The descriptions were ok, the plot is genuinely interestingĀ  and it couldā€™ve been so good if the characters and the message were different.Ā
The ā€œonly white english culture is the way of civilized menā€ message wasā€¦ definitely somethingā€¦ the absolute BLATANT fatphobia was also somethingā€¦ like, at least give the kid an actual name instead of a degrading nickname nameā€¦
Again, this couldā€™ve been good (itā€™s a good book! Itā€™s enjoyable!) but it aged so poorly and has so many terrible decisions that I canā€™t see it having much more repercussion in the futureā€¦

This is a brilliant book and a brutal deconstruction of the 'nice English kids are stranded on an island and have a jolly good time' trope popular in the first half of the 20th century. I hated it and would thoroughly recommend it.Ā
