Ninth House checks all the Autumn Dark Academia boxes in theory, but actually reading this book felt as if something was missing. I was baffled as to how I wasn't enjoying a book that was full of secret societies, elitism, a prestigious university, dark histories, and haunting characters. But I think the charm of Bardugo was her ability to bring to create a world so realistic yet magical that you simultaneously couldn't have begun to imagine, yet see yourself within it without skipping a beat. Ninth House, however, was utterly basic. There was no vivid world building and nothing to set it apart from any other dark academia book out there right now. There were sprinkles of Bardugo's magic that was enough to keep you reading, but not nearly enough to be memorable.

I like the idea better than the execution. The concept, secret magical societies hidden in plain sight at Yale, is intriguing. The characters leave much to be desired. Frustratingly predictable at times. There's a good story at the heart, but it gets lost in the shuffle.

It wasn't an easy read but it was a good one. Leigh Bardugo was not kidding when she said this book goes to some dark places...

Sehr spannende Thematik und im Ganzen eine sehr spannende Story, bei der man gespannt ist wie es weitergeht. Die erste Hälfte hat sich etwas gezogen, zum Ende hin war es jedoch sehr spannend.
