Was this a little cringe? Yes. Did I still enjoy myself? Also yes. This was definitely a fun time and I will read the second one cause I’m curious and I want to see more of Darlington if that’s a possibility. There is a LOT going on in this book and I was struggling a bit to keep all the locations and people (with multiple nicknames) in check. I found the writing to be a bit fluffy and sometimes it took me out of it. It kept me hooked though and I’m curious to read more!

I didn't really feel gripped by this book until about halfway through - the pacing up front was a little slow, and there's a lot to learn about the world. But at about that halfway point, something tipped, and once the book had me, it HAD me. Dark and mysterious and violent and magical. Really really great read.

A Dark Departure from the Grishaverse

As a fan of Leigh Bardugo's Grishaverse books, I was excited to read Ninth House. However, I struggled with the dark themes in this book, including rape, abuse, drug use, and excessive swearing. These elements overshadowed the plot and made it hard for me to enjoy the story. Cringe factor high.

The protagonist, Alex Stern, is intriguing, and the mystery of Yale's secret magical societies is compelling. Yet, the graphic depictions of violence and trauma were too intense for my taste. While Bardugo's writing is skillful, Ninth House may be better suited for readers who appreciate darker, more mature themes.

While the Ninth House showcases Bardugo's versatility it just wasn't the right fit for me due to its heavy content.

Content warnings: Rape (Ghost and human), drug abuse, fentanyl, Physical and mental abuse. And are you ready for this gag factor... autcoprophagy (don't google that work).

Decent fantasy/mystery novel. Definitely written as a first novel in a series. Lots of action throughout, but the plot line is bleary and confusing. Still not sure if I’ll continue on in the series

‼️Trigger warnings definitely need to be published at the beginning of this book! If they could dedicate an entire page to information about the type face, they could have dedicated a page to avoid triggering or traumatizing readers.

This book has rape (including rape of an underaged girl), graphic murder scenes, drugs/drug overdose death, and a lot of violence and gore. It constantly reminds the reader of all of the gruesome ways that people can die. Some of it felt like it was just added for the shock factor. Somehow all of the characters just continue along like they don't all need therapy 🙄

Loved the magic and lore behind this story but it was much more graphic and violent than what I generally prefer to read. My bad for not doing my due diligence, but also their bad for not publishing any TWs in the book.
