There were very strong parts. There were also very weak parts. Some of the writing was clunky and uninspiring. It definitely tried to do too many things and ended up not delivering as a whole.
Themes were very good; in terms of the characters, while fleshed out, I didn't particularly care what happened to them. 
The hype monster claims another book. I'd 100% watch this as a film, because I believe it could be very good in that medium, especially since I wouldn't need to experience the bulk of the writing.
