FINALLY some character development for our queen isabelle lightwood 💗
not a huge fan of this one, as the story dragged a bit and the incesty sebastian made me really uncomfortable.... also, clary pisses me off so freaking much. i still love simon more than anyone, though.
i really don’t know what to expect for the last installment but all i know is that i need more tid references!

A little slower than the other novels but great! Can’t put the book down.

2.5-3 stars. I find myself way more interested in the secondary character than Jace and Clary. Simon's story line is the most interesting. I'm curious where Clare is going to take him next after that big change.

Hmmmm. For some reason, this one just didn't have the same pull as the rest in the series. I liked it, but I wasn't really in a mad dash to finish it, and I never really felt that "OMG OMG MORE" feeling that I usually do. Except in one part:
SpoilerNot!Jace and Clary reading the boooook, and looking at Will's signature, and how the dedication to Tessa was all faded, and it's been so long, and omg what happens, NEED MORE WILL.TESSA.JEM. Ahem. So there was that.

Although it's not like this book had any more characters than the last one, I felt really annoyed by how often it switched back and forth. I really, REALLY don't care about Maia and Jordan. They can take their werewolf selves and just gtfo. Stop wasting my valuable page space! Though I admit I skimmed their scenes... Anyway.

I liked Isabelle and Simon, though they need to both stop being so whiny and just SPEAK. In fact, most people in this book need to learn to freaking USE YOUR WORDS. I'm looking at you, Alec.
SpoilerI can't even be mad at Magnus for what happened, though it DEPRESSES me. If some boyfriend of mine was intimidated by my lifespan, and decided to take it upon himself to stealth around figuring out ways to end it? Oh man. Bitch is gone. So while I'm sure they'll work it out eventually, I'm Team Magnus right now.

OH. And Sebastian is badass. I forgot that part.

And the conflict never ends! Still hooked on this series, eventhough I am getting tired of the growing sexual tension between Clary and Jace. I think the author was trying to build up the anticipation (will they or won't they?) but I wish they would just get it on so the story can move on. So many pages are wasted on them already, its getting old. I will still read the next one to see how it ends.

2021: This is more like an even 3 stars. This is honestly the most boring Shadowhunter book there is (and its so long good lord)- the ending saves it, absolutely, but this entire book is such a slog. It's a struggle to care about any of what the characters are up to (especially Jordan and Maia) and the redeeming features lie in Cassandra Clare showing off how well she knows her own character - Jace -
Spoilerin that he's just so slightly off for most of the book and he genuinely feels wrong until you see him again free from Sebastian's control in brief moments
. The second redeeming feature is the ending, which Clare tends to excel at and this one was no different. It was the buildup that was boring as hell.

ALSO: I have NEVER ever understood the love for Magnus and Alec - they are the least developed most boring couple ever. Magnus on his own is a great character but Alec is whiney, jealous, has no personality, and nothing about their interactions is at all interesting. What Alec considers in this book is just the nail in the coffin. He's a immature child and
SpoilerI don't blame Magnus for breaking up with him.
ARRGG

2019: 3.5 - the ending saved what was very much a filler book.

Surprisingly I had a really fun time with this. I started this series when I was a teenager and since I’m nearing 30, I think it’s about time I finish it.

I still say Simon is my favourite, and Jace and Clary are fine, I don’t care for them especially with the whole weird things that happened at the start of the series, but they had some really sweet scenes in this.

(Also side note, no offence Jace but since he wasn’t exactly himself in this book, he’s WAY less annoying when he’s not cracking countless jokes and being overly cocky)

But my biggest gripe is the incest. Actual, full on incest. Stop if Cassandra Clare! This would have been a 4 stars if it wasn’t included.

**Spoilers below discussing this **

We know that Jace and Clary aren’t siblings which is great, but Clary does kiss Sebastian in book 3, her biological brother! And then in this book there’s weird little moments they touch and she reacts to it in a kind of weird way.

Thats then followed up with Sebastian forcing a kiss on her, saying they should be together romantically because it’s not weird if Shadowhunters stay in the family tree I guess, and then Sebastian tried to sexually assault Clary!

This man literally tries taking her pants off while he’s hard. HER ACTUAL BROTHER!

How did this ever get published? I’m fine if people are into that in a fictional sense but for a YA book it’s so creepy, especially knowing Cassie Clare likes incest fictionally.

Leave your adult kinks out of teen books please, thank you.

Besides that, I enjoyed my time. It was kind of pointless but hey, it was enjoyable and easy to get through. I’m looking forward to finally finishing Infernal Devices and Mortal Instruments
