Desolate island setting? Check. Fossil hunting? Check. Feminist themes? Check.

This one was a great Autumn read. I didn't see the plot twist coming either!

Faith was such a relatable character. Seeing her find the realities of the world and realise the strengths and drawbacks of womanhood was so interesting.

Let alone the inclusion of fossil hunting!!

Definite Autumn rec from me!

"Faith had always told herself that she was not like other ladies. But neither, it seemed, were other ladies."

So great.

I almost gave up on the book a couple times. Our heroine was a bit too stoic, to the point where it seemed whiny in how not whiny she was.
BUT I'm glad I stuck with it. I thoroughly enjoyed the wrapping up.

Great as a YA novel, as it covers lots about ourselves and our relationships with parents.

Another one of Hardinge's excellent YA novels - The Lie Tree is quite a dark and chilling story, with Hardinge's characteristically beautiful and compelling prose.

The Lie Tree, the title and the synopsis are a bit misleading. Faith's father does not even die until you are about 120 pages into the story. The book does gets off to a good start, and then comes several chapters about how women should basically no exist, especially young ladies such as Faith. This is brow beaten into the reader for several lengthy pages. Granted, at the end those opinions and views do play into the story. It just would have been nicer to have little snippets spread throughout the book. Once you are introduced to the Lie Tree the story really starts moving along and it was a quick adventurous read. 3 stars are because it did take a bit to get started.

the first half of this book was the slowest piece of fiction i’ve read in a long long time. don’t recommend if you’re in a slump
