The most heartbreaking and visceral, yet beautiful and tender book I’ve ever read. Wow, wow, wow.

i’m so glad i finally read one of the cornerstones of lesbian literature. i learned so much about the hardships our queer elders faced, as well as a peak into aspects of lesbian culture in the past. i enjoyed following jess goldberg through her life, though it was quite harrowing at times. this book was compulsively readable, as well. i read it in about 3 days! such an important piece of lesbian historical literature!

A great work of speculative fiction- retelling the many real experiences of queer and gender diverse people during the mid/late 20th century.

Revelatory in ways I cannot put into words.
Exceedingly powerful and a real look at history and humanity.
A must-read book, especially for queer folks.

didn’t like this as much as I thought I would but I do still like it quite a bit. I wasn’t a big fan of the writing style and I found that the timeline tended to jump forward months or years without warning. It is very clearly a labour of love however, and it is a very interesting and important read. If you are interested in queer history and like historical fiction you would probably like it. It does have a lot of heavy content but I didn’t find it to be gratuitous, it was real and unfortunately necessary to tell an accurate story, (though of course you should check warnings if needed).

Reading this book 40 years after it’s initial publication doesn’t take away from it’s ability to reach a hand deep into my chest and squeeze my heart until about ready to burst, only to cradle it afterwards. This copy has been sitting on my shelf for years and I cannot believe it took me so long to pick up, but I feel as though it found me when I needed it most.

Get ready to tear up. As a queer person who is and has been in a relationship with afab and amab trans* people/nonbinary folks, this book hit me hard without having had to experience the struggle with gender and dysphoria on my own skin. I understood and lived through the pain of violence and hate crime, because that I understand.
The History that accompanies the story is simply beautiful. I loved this book.
