This one may be one of my new favs of Melanie's. It's dark and forbidding, entwined with magic, a war between hope and despair. The characters are all shrouded in mystery, and I love the uncertainty of not knowing who you can trust.
The setting, Nazar - once known as Istanbul - was completely foreign to me, but the descriptions were rich and detailed, without being overwhelming. It felt familiar to me, comfortable. I could easily imagine the whole story in movie-format.
Full disclaimer, there is a certain amount of insta-love contained in these pages, but I found it didn't rankle me like it usually does. When magic is involved, it's no holds barred. The gloves are off and Karsak isn't pulling any punches.
