When my oldest was four, my husband read aloud to her [b:Black Ships Before Troy|162954|Black Ships Before Troy|Rosemary Sutcliff|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1348315271l/162954._SX50_.jpg|2126116] and [b:The Wanderings of Odysseus|780194|The Wanderings of Odysseus|Rosemary Sutcliff|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1348846563l/780194._SX50_.jpg|2126118] to introduce the stories of these Greek epics to her for the first time. She is now six, and this year, as we studied Ancient Greece, I read the stories to her again from this edition. She did remember much of the plot of each story in broad strokes, and reading this over a period of a couple of weeks helped reinforce the details and to reawaken her enthusiasm for familiar characters like Odysseus, Zeus, Athena, Telemachus, Hector, and Helen. The illustrations also really engaged her and helped her visualize what was happening. Personally, I'm not crazy about reading descriptions of battles and military strategy, but personal preference aside, I think this is a great adaptation for young readers of stories they can read and enjoy repeatedly throughout their lives.
