This deserves 100 stars. The audiobook was so powerful, read by a full cast.

This audiobook is fire. The writing in this is magical. And the only reason I’m giving it 4/5 and not a 5/5 is because in parts this book feels disjointed. Like it’s hobbled together with overlapping or tales that don’t fit in with the timeline given before each story exactly. Regardless it’s another excellent piece of historical writing and I gleaned quite a bit of new information which I love.

This was definitely not a light and fluffy read and not one you read in one sitting. I went with audio format and listened to a bit every day while I did chores and got ready for bed and that was really the perfect way to consume this book. It’s heavy and dense but it’s very well written and was very enjoyable to listen to. It has a lot of important information and truths and I definitely think everyone could learn a lot from picking up this book!

Once again I am FLOORED that I was not taught most of this in school. Growing up, I moved every two years, so I went to two high schools, six elementary schools, one private school, some schools "on post," public schools, whatever, and what they all had in common was one thing: they were all whitewashed in terms of what we learned regarding this type of history. And perhaps if I/we were taught these things in school (not only as college elective courses, for instance), we'd be less likely to repeat the four hundred years of torture and barbarism described in this book. I am reminded of the quote Jim Jones had etched in his Jonestown pavilion: "Those who do not learn from the past are condemned to repeat it."

It accomplished what it set out to perfectly and none of the individual essays were of a significantly lower quality than any others. It was super informative and though I had studied a lot about American history for POC in general, some specific Black historical figures I hadn't heard of! And the poetry at the close of every section was really pretty ):

The formatting was odd which is why I took off a star but the content was very necessary
