A ridiculously awful guilty pleasure. Different enough from the show to be entertaining and non-spoiler-y. I chewed through the whole series in a week.

At this point, you might be asking why I keep reading these comics. The only reason is that I like the show & want to understand the source material. Otherwise, I would've stopped if not long ago at the very latest with this volume or more like DNFd it.

This volume is not only so extremely boring it also continues handling SA so poorly it is wild. Besides that in this volume Ennis also tried his hand at writing a trans character, which is so insanely bad and offensive it is wow.. & this is not due to me being stuck up but seriously this is just downright bad writing. There is no glimpse of you could spin this somehow & see how it is supposed to be anything but bad, anything but blatant transphobia.
If you don't care about any of this might I interest you in the terrible handling of animal abuse? Because yes of course Ennis also incorporated this in his quest to show how there is not a single topic he handled in a good way - good in the sense that it's interesting, has depth.
All you get from the animal abuse scene is it immediately being excused because Hughie was a kid & so Annie literally says "Hughie, all little kids are psychos! You gave into it once, big deal!"

Ah how much I hate this series. Still going to power through the end & then blacklist everything that has Ennis's name on it. Life is too short to read boring and just plain bad stuff like his.

Ultimately a bit of a slog made on the hope that Hughie can maintain interest on his own, or that the pairing of Annie and Hughie is enough plot to maintain readers, which it isn't.

Bullet Review:

Of all the entries in this series, this might be the most frustrating. There's nothing worse than 6 issues of your main character whinging and wangsting and navel-gazing. The first issue wasn't terrible, and after volume 7, I do feel like we had to address some of Hughie's demons. But I still am not fully clear why he went off on Annie like he did (she wasn't two-timing him, they weren't together when she did what she did), and we still haven't addressed his own abuse.

I think the best part comes in the mysterious man who left the number and "Mallory". Oh well, despite the hiccup, can't wait for the next volume.

Watching Hughie "find himself" is so entertaining.

did we really need hughie’s backstory? not really. main event is some sideplot stuff that has no bearing on the overall story. maybe about five pages of stuff that’ll be relevant from here onwards.

Great to have Hughie in Scotland but the overarching story is a bit dull in truth. Some good moments however.
