A.K. Mulford keeps proving that fantasy is better when authors abandon the societal norms of medieval Europe. Give me more nonbinary protagonists! Mulford proves that an author can refer to a character using they/them pronouns without confusing the reader. Now, Listen... Trust me when I say I am easily confused. If I could follow along, so can you.
One thing I will say is that I noticed a few grammatical errors in the second half of the book that surprised me and took me out of the world a little. I think that aspect of the book could have been a little more polished.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book! I hope more fantasy authors see Mulford's success and make an effort to dismiss the societal aspects of worldbuilding that we are so used to and so tired of. Like, seriously? In a world where dragons, sorcerers, and elves exist, women still need to be assaulted and oppressed to make the book 'realistic!?' Mulford's writing is really, REALLY refreshing in that aspect.
Sorry! Tangent over. Loved this book, and I recommend checking it out :)
