I so loved Eleanor and this book. Some of the things Eleanor would say reminded me of the lead character from the recent film, 'Hard Truths'. Pansy in that film expressed her mental ill health differently, in a harsher, often rude way. Eleanor expressed her mental ill health in a matter of fact, no nonsense, humourless way.

I was impressed by her resilience, having been abused by her lone parent and then further abused by a sole boyfriend.  That she was thirty and holding down a steady job and flat was remarkable. Of course she had no family, friends, network or support system but she kept herself going.

The joy of the book was seeing such a network and support system grow around her, thanks to her colleague and new friend, Raymond. I loved the blooming friendship between them, still marked with Eleanor's unusual behaviours. Despite them, Raymond was loyal t   her and even saved her life.

Perhaps Eleanor's flourishing good health and engagement with happiness happened too quickly once she started seeing a psychotherapist but her discoveries overall felt realistic as she started to  build a rich life. Good on you, Eleanor,  I'm rooting for you!

4.25 stars! Eleanor is such a great character. I related to her awkward, lack of social abilities, direct and uncompromising style. I couldn’t figure out where the story was going but I definitely wanted to keep reading. I wish there had been one more chapter as it ended on a bit of an open-ended cliff hanger. I didn’t guess the twist, but then again I didn’t research the book and didn’t know there was one, so I wasn’t looking for it. I couldn’t decide if it was going to be a thriller, a romance, or psychological fiction. After finishing it I’m still not sure I know.

I relate to Eleanor far more than I'd like to admit. I think this is a book more about growth than anything else. Eleanor starts off as a very unlikable character who you can't help but sympathize with as you learn more about her.

It just didn't quite pique my interest enough throughout and keep up the pacing to get the 3 ⭐
