Bergelson is considered one of the great Yiddish writers of the Soviet Union, and like many of Soviet-Yiddish peers, he was killed in Stalin's purges.  Bergelson was at the vanguard of Yiddish Modernism, and he is an expert at the Modernist literary style, and his frequent subject is the corruption and dissolution of the shtetl.  For me personally, it is not a style I do well with, but if you do enjoy that kind of style, Bergelson is definitely a must read.
