I gave this a chance, I really did. I got about halfway through though and decided to give it up. You can get a lot of the same information and more, but presented in a more palatable way in Dr. John Medina's Brain Rules for Babies. It's a must read!

Continues to be my favorite parenting book, as it is not prescriptive in what to do/how to parent. Instead, it asks you to reflect on your own growing up and how those experiences do (or might) influence your choices as a parent so you can be more intentional in your parenting. It's a wonderful book for expectant parents and, in my experience, one that you can easily come back to over and over and find something new each time.

This book is fantastic for understanding "the family of origin" and how we were parented in order to effectively relearn healthy patterns of engaging in relationships, including parenting. The hardest part for me to read through were the "Spotlight on Science" sections since a lot that was medical heavy and went over my head, BUT it was interesting since it discussed the intricacies and complexities of the brain. Overall, HIGHLY recommended especially when it comes to reworking your past and redeeming your story in order to be a better parent and human (and I don't mean that as a comparison to your parents, but rather as being the best version of YOU).

Fascinating. Learned a lot about the parent/child relationship and about myself.

1 star | I’m tempted to give this book 2 stars because it did have some good points and redeeming qualities but MY GOODNESS was it ever verbose!! Also, the back and forth between the main content, the reflective questions, and the academia just made it such a slog to get through. This is the first book I started reading this year, six months ago, and it is now the 30th book I have finished. Not sure why I couldn’t just let this one go, but I am glad it’s done. Again, there were some good points and some pieces that I highlighted, BUT there are several other parenting books out there that are much more enjoyable to read with more practical examples!

Highly recommended, this book was a little too scholarly for what I had the energy for. I never actually finished the whole thing. During a season where I have more time for introspection (specifically, introspection that isn't the natural result of daily living with 3 children!), I'll take another look at this.

Really good, but so academic I found it very hard to digest. I'm sure there is some great stuff in there!
