10/10 like I loved every minute of this book and one of my perfect genres--pirates, games of deception, fantasy and a revenge story! At every cliffhanger and plot twist I was GASPING because I never could’ve guessed any of it. I would always read this again!

This is an original, fresh take on The Count of Monte Cristo. I liked the worldbuilding and the parallels between the way this book and the classic are written. Toward the end, the twists and suspense do not stop building, and the set-up for the sequel is clear and exciting.

So I’ve never read or seen The Count of Monte Cristo so I don’t know how close to the story this was. BUT what I can tell you is that since that book/movie is so popular I’m going to say that it was probably actually good and not mediocre like this book was.

The beginning of the story was really intriguing and I thought it was really well written. Once I got to page 200 ish I just started to get bored. So I tried to finish it as quickly as possible hoping for a little resolution and to be completely honest I didn’t get much. I know this is a duology and the whole point is to get you to read book 2 but to not tie up a single string and to leave me utterly confused on what is going on just doesn’t make me want to pick the next book up. And things started to feel as if they were thrown into the story as tie ins without actually thought out behind them. Ex: Roach and Ash fever

It was slow, mediocre, and confusing. Another not great read from an Owlcrate

Scavenge The Stars
⭐️⭐️⭐️

Such an interesting world, almost reminded me of Ketterdam and Ravka. I also quite liked the writing style.
Sadly though, I didn’t enjoy it as much as I wanted to. The characters were so boring, I felt like nothing ever happened. And when it actually did, it was just mediocre.
I kept waiting for something to happen, and then it just didn’t.
I was a bit confused about Bas and Cayo. To be honest I kind of shipped them first, they were cute. Then he just left.
I for sure thought I was going to give this one up, but some part of me wanted to keep on going and needed to know what was to happen.
So now that I’m done with this I’m finally going to read something else for a while.
