I put off reading this book for months after buying it because I really didn't want to finish this series but eventually I caved and it was certainly worth it.
This book is written in such a way that you can feel that things are coming to an end. There is a kind of finality to it that I wasn't expecting. I wasn't looking forward to reading the fallout of the end of book 8 but luckily Novik skips much of that and jumps to some months later without any sacrifice to our understanding of events. Laurence and Temeraire get into some entertaining shenanigans and there are moments (sometimes within pages of each other) that are unbelievably fluffy or heart rending.
There is also a sex scene. Wasn't a fan personally but other people may like it more?
I found the actual ending to be just OK as it is pretty open-ended in a hopeful way but I appreciate it is difficult to end a story. Tharkay continues to be the ultimate deus ex machina right to the end though which I find hilarious. Like this man's timing is perfect! He must be minding his own business and then be like 'sorry got to go, Laurence is going to get into trouble in a month's time and I am in the wrong continent".
Moderate: Death and Gore
Minor: Fire/Fire injury
