Amazingly well written. While it's a hard read, every time I found myself on the verge of getting too excited by the scientific drama of medical research, almost forgetting that the road to cancer's cure is paved with human victory as well as tragedy, the author pulled me back and re-humanised the topic with a personal anecdote.

I disagree with the "biography" part, though. Reading the book, I never got the feeling cancer is an entity or a historic character. However, I'm glad my expectations form the title were not fulfilled. Artificially personifying such a diverse group of diseases probably wouldn't have benefitted the book.

Highly recommended read.

The progress in cancer detection and treatment explained in an easy-to-comprehend way, leaving one both somewhat disillusioned and hopeful about the potential of medical research.

A good dive into the field of oncology - some parts were just too deep and winding for me, and I wish there was a little more focus on patients, but still glad I made it through the whole thing

سبحان من علّم الإنسان!
الكتاب جميل .. ووضعه كمقرر لطلبة الطب مع نزع حشو غير مفيد للطلبة يبدو فكرة جيدة للغاية

5 stars, but this isn't a pleasure read...more of a textbook.

Very, very thorough. Perhaps too thorough. It obviously wasn't the intention but I can't help but feel dejected about cancer and finding a cure after listening to this.

Overall an interesting read, and a complete history of the Oncology field. Fit really well with my education at the time. I especially enjoy the parts where he focused on the epidemiology history, very interesting and applicable to the EBM craze that is medicine these days. Otherwise, his style was a little sensational and made some of the issues he discussed overly simplified and biased. Still a worthwhile read.
