Really interesting book. Focuses on feminist images and art from 1857-2017. There’s commentary (which I skimmed more than read) on each section and the images that support the different sections. Very fascinating look at the global imagery throughout the last 160 years.

This book with it's lovely cover art by Deva Pardue made me write down at least a hundred names of artists to look up.
It is a great view over years and years of feminist art, or art by feminists (1875 - now ).
Going from posters made for the suffragettes, to Beyonce's Lemonade.
I get that it misses some things, or could've elaborated on other things more then it did, the book could've been triple its size, but I think the authors just wanted us to get a good general look and give ourselves the chance to dig deeper if we wanted to (which I do, and will)

How I experienced this book is pretty much how this protester talks about why she came to the London's woman liberation march in 1971;
'I am here to see other women who have been active and that we know nothing about. No one tells us about women organizing in this country and we wanted to come together and look at each other'
We see much more these days, but in general media there is still more talk about men and money in the arts then there is about all these amazing activist protest artists.

This book gives me inspiration and power to go and do my thing, whether good or bad, as long as I do it with the right intentions, and even then.... just sit down and get creative. Work together with other women, establish new networks that facilitate feminist and other art, together, sustain women artists in their pursuit of their careers.

I stumbled upon this text while researching gender identity at my local library. The cover alone is very intriguing but I really, really liked the content inside in terms of how it was organized and curated. It's not often a female can sit and see the whole of her history laid out before her in all its beauty and brutality. I really, really, enjoyed and recommend this for anyone.
