This is a linear story of one event happening after another. There’s very little character development and the relationships are all superficial. There’s tragedy and no real levity. So I find myself wondering why I liked this book, and I realized it’s because it's a plausible book. This could happen anywhere. My first King novel. I'm quite disappointed. It wasn't really scary at all, plus there was almost no effort to create tension. Very crass writing and language, plus everyone is urinating all the time? Wtf.

Fairly fast-paced for a Stephen King book. Not my favorite of his but still couldn’t put it down for the last 150 pages. Certainly as sad as it is scary.

Even though this book is knows as the author's most classics, it didn't stand the test of time amazingly. The story starts off veeery slow paced, sometimes you feel like what you are reading is just a waste of time that goes on for pages. But towards the end, the intensity is cranked up at maximum. The final chapters are going to be engraved in my mind for ever.
The characters are pretty forgettable,  Nothing too special about them, but I get the feeling that it was in the author's intentions to make them as human and normal as possible. Completely different from the movie's '83 adaptation, I think it's worth reading for the ending (being one of the most traumatizing of his books)
And because it is after all, part of the classics.

For what is a mundane monster horror story this split its focus far too much. The horror of being blinded by life's difficulties and led by innocuous circumstance to the point that you can't see the threat in front you is interesting but the threat felt contrived and fairly uninteresting. Additionally, the swinging of circumstances especially in Vic and Roger's storyline felt unrealistic and more for convenience than anything else. A more systematic villain that better related to the violence being enabled by life and it's grim ebbs and flows might have been more interesting and would have allowed a more fleshed out and believable series of circumstances and more satisfying characterisations. Alternatively, give the monster horror a chance, transition between different power dynamics, add a cat and mouse segment or something just to give the tension more substance.

Although it could have used a thorough editor, the theme of pain and trauma being experienced in isolation is still prevalent and Cujo the St. Bernard deserved a better end.
