3.75/5 ALL I KNOW IS PAIN AND SUFFERING NOW. SADNESSS AND DESPAIR SADNESS AND DESPAIR. The first 200 pages of this were a drag they were boring and I was falling asleep. That’s the only thing bad ab it is everything in that first chunk, that doesn’t matter I’m going to ignore that. THE ENDING HURT. IT HURT. WHEN AM I EVER GOING TO FEEL HAPPINESS AGAIN. This book stripped me of all my happiness down to the bone then blended it in a blender made of chainsaws through it on the freeway and had it ran over 50000 times. Then scooped it up through it down the garbage disposal and multiplied it by -♾️. I am Helene and Helene is me. Nothing that ever happened to her was a good thing, only bad or sad things happened to her. I love her so much and the only thing I want in the world is for her to finally be happy.

If I am bring honest with myself, there is a part of me that hates this ending. Because as this book and every one before it so eloquently demonstrated, life is suffering and pain.

And also, I'm a sucker for a happy ending.

But in the end, I have to respect the story that was told to me. It was an honest one, with honest heartbreak and true grief. But also deep and unfailing love.

So thank you, for an incredible story.

This is the final instalment of Sabaa Tahir's An Ember in the Ashes series. And if you've read the previous books from the series, you already know that Sabaa is an author who likes to torment her characters, but also likes to give some hope, some romance, and a lot of pain.

Sabaa is a great storyteller and a talented writer. She creates this world and characters that feel so real, the story flowing like silk and is easy to read. But be prepared for a few heartbreaks! I still mourn two particular deaths ... seriously, why did they have to die?

My favourite character is Helene. She's brave, strong, determined, and fiercely loyal. Before I even started reading the book, I knew I wanted her to have the happy ending that she so truly deserves.

Despite by heartbreak, I still love how this series ended. I love all the characters, including the Nightbringer, and appreciate what happens to him in the end. I appreciate the message of hope, love and humanity.

This is one of those series that will stay with me for a long time.

I am going to be thinking about this quartet for a LONG time. Each book built so beautifully off each other and I am so sad it’s over. I genuinely feel like I could read so much more from these characters and this world. Laia, Elias, Helene….all has amazing character arcs and I love them so much. Ugh.
