One to Watch by Kate Stayman-London is a quirky take on reality tv shows where impossibly beautiful people vie to be the chosen one...but what if the person doing the choosing was a stylish plus sized fashion blogger, who has sworn off men altogether since their heart was broken?

This book pulled me in, I can tell you! It had just the right balance of romance with real life struggles, to tug at the heartstrings. I really felt for Bea as she navigates meeting 25 men on the reality show, Main Squeeze, narrowing them down to just her chosen 3, all the while wondering if the man of her dreams has dashed her chance at her own happily ever after.

Chick lit is not one of my go to genres, but I must admit that “One To Watch”popped up on my radar when it was first published in 2020. I’m not particularly a fan of The Bachelor or The Bachelorette, but the premise of a plus sized woman trying to find love on a reality show appealed to me. I placed it on my TBR but I kept funneling it to the bottom. This book resurfaced when I chose it to fulfill one of my prompts for my reading challenge. I’m actually glad I did. I was fully invested in Bea’s journey and the potential outcome. Bea is so relatable in how she projects her own self perception and thought processes onto potential suitors that she becomes her own worst enemy. Her journey from her hesitation at first about appearing on the show “Main Squeeze” to it’s final “kiss off” is fraught with self doubt and uncertainty, but at the same time what she discovers about herself is what eventually saves her life. The story packs a powerful message that so many women and young women could benefit from. You are more than just a body. Your heart and soul is your true essence, your true gift to the world. The rest is just the disposable gift wrap.

I could not finish this book. It was making me hate my own body hearing the way she thought about her own body and the way the men on the show treated her. None of those men should have been anywhere around her. This is NOT a romance novel. It's like an Anti-Romance novel.

I have fond memories of watching The Bachelor/Bachelorette as a teen, and this book felt both comfortable and exciting for its obvious parallels to the reality series! I loved, loved, loved Bea and her suitors, her family and friends - the whole cast seemed full and real, and the villains were certainly villainous. A sweet, drama-filled love story was just what I needed *chef's kiss*
