The book is a sequel. I found it at a used book store. The plot and premise drive the story. It is a interesting premise following Baxter and his awakened magical ability as he attends a magic school in South Africa run by a shay government organization. Dark and gory it goes into the merky depths of magic use and of a caste system of us vs. them of magic creatures and a shays government organization that runs it all. It takes the concept of Harry Potter and the Ministry of Magic but makes it darker. The plot however has quite a few holes, with the protagonist and other heroes getting out of difficult situations with mere luck or chance. Often a Deus ex Machina sort of rescue, repeatedly through out the book. A lot of situations are wrapped up too quickly or with no real consequences to the heroes. However for a quick read and a interesting gritty take on magic use in the modern world, it is quite thrilling. As well as it’s focus on a non-anglosphere or European approach to magic and myths and using elements and traditions from various cultures of Africa creates a unique take on a Hero’s magic journey.

This was ok… rambling, but interesting. I liked the plot more than the execution of the book. It was a decent follow-up to Apocalypse Now Now, but honestly I’m good with the series ending with this book. The narration was good. The characters didn’t have much depth or personality.
