Once upon a time I wanted to be a materials engineer, so this would have been perfect for 13 year old me. It was particularly interesting when it was describing something new to me like how to make chocolate. I could have done without the occasional philosophical discussions though.

I liked this book, not just as much as the authors other book, Liquid Rules. This book can spent a lot of time on one material. I therefore sometimes found that too in-depth and not as easily digestible. Because it was “stuff” and therefore less focused the other book with its defined subject, “liquid” it was more enjoyable.

For a book about materials science, it was pretty readable and enjoyable, with personal anecdotes and stories setting it apart from a textbook. I do think I learned a few things :)

I learned a few things and started looking at the world around me in a whole new way - especially at jelly/jello.

I really wish I could remember more details from this book as it'd greatly improve small talks. Paper looks like a carpet, pencils are related to diamonds and tea kills porcelain cups. Nothing boring happened in this book. And it was easy to go through because of the personal stories fitted through all the technical details.
