The adventures and rich cast of characters are still a strong foundation in this book. However, it’s necessary preoccupation with setting up circumstances for future installments in the series
Spoiler namely, the history of Ciri coming into Geralt’s guardianship
somewhat diminishes the charm cast by the first book’s ability to more freely swing to and fro among exciting, seemingly less implicated tales of Geralt’s adventures. And even if the individual tales and encounters in the first book are actually equally critical to setting up the world of the coming novels, I would argue that it better disguises them as unique gems on a strand rather than a growing web.

Still, this book is a wonderful time, full of rich, complex characters, fantastical philosophical musings, and a wide scope of suspense and intrigue.

This is one of the most misogynistic books I have ever had the misfortune of ever reading. I kept track. The only woman not sexualized, have violence threatened or comitted against them, or contributes to the overall negative tone towards women, is the merchant's wife in the last story.
