surreal and disturbing.

somehow Ozeki has managed to tie together motherhood + fertility, abuse, and industrial agriculture into a fluid & compelling narrative. it never felt stiff or clunky.

my year of meats is unflinching in its exploration of these themes. rape and domestic violence are described graphically.
the parallels between women and meat running through the book & the build up towards unveiling the horrific reality of the meat industry… it does not make for a comfortable read, but it is absolutely an impactful + important one.

i will also echo the same sentiment as other reviewers - i loved akiko and wish we had seen more of her story!

I loved this book and everything by Ruth Ozeki- her mixture of current events, internal exploration, mindfulness and bringing the past and present together is really descriptive and beautiful - I love the character development as well and the pacing was perfect
