I received this book in Goodreads contest for an honest review.

I remember entering this contest for this book thinking could this be any good? Who wants to read about Vincent Van Gogh unless you are an art student? But the fact that it was written from the perspective of a little poor girl intrigued me.
Michelle Rene did not disappoint me; she was able to bring me, the reader, into the miserable life of a young girl and hold my attention . Even though the book is not a "happy" story the reader isn't left with a sense of despair because you start to cheer on Maria ( Little Cat ) , hoping that she will over come her childhood of poverty, alcohol abuse, and lack of education to have a better, more fulfilling life than her mother and Van Gogh. It was very interesting that Rene included the paintings that Van Gogh drew and inspired the plot line.
One of the most interesting and different books I have ever read . Bravo.
