If you’re looking for a book that has secrets, suspense, or even a super enjoyable plot, this book might not be for you... however I still recommend it. It’s just such a calm/cozy but still educational read. If you’re a big family loving person, I think you’ll like this book too. I’m not gonna write a huge review breaking down the book, because I honestly don’t remember much about it. It was a little confusing, so I’d suggest reading it twice, in audio and physical book form. I listened to the audio, gonna read the physical book one day.
2020 Update: god why do you lie so much to yourself, sky?! you’re. never. going. to. read. these. books. again. you don’t reread, others do but not you lmao.

2.5 stars. Woodson is an incredible writer and can craft beautiful phrases, tight prose, and wonderful story but unfortunately I found myself too often comparing Another Brooklyn to Brown Girl Dreaming which was a top read for me in 2016. In fact, it was a must own, and I'll buy it for my daughters, but this one wasn't the same format, which I loved in BGD and didn't have the same heart and soul to it.

Beautifully written and touching coming-of-age story. My complaint is that I wanted it to be longer, with the stories more fleshed out.

Gorgeous

Was this a poem or a novel? It was beautiful. The whole novel is lyrical. Just spilling over wirh beautiful sentences. I had a lump in my throat the whole time I read it because it was a living breathing coming of age story. My own story could not have been more different, but I felt this. A work of art.

The writing is amazing, but it wasn’t what I expected and isn’t my style.
