An emotional reflection on the life of a child actress suffering under an abusive mother, a debilitating eating disorder, and being forced into the spotlight. I loved icarly growing up and my heart aches for all that happened behind the scenes to a girl my age, who never got her childhood, but I’m glad Jennette has come so far now :’)

This is one of the best memoirs I think I’ve ever read. Jenette McCurdy has an excellent writers voice. The way she writes this, from a present, first person POV, as if she’s experiencing it for the first time, is a harrowing way of telling her story. It’s extremely effective.

I found myself talking out loud multiple times during this book, responding to Jenette’s story. I would say “are you fucking kidding me?!” And “what the hell.” And “how can this be real,” knowing full well it can be real.

That’s just the content of the book. I listened to the audiobook. Her narration of this was doubly spectacular. There were parts I had to listen to multiple times. I appreciate the fact that they didn’t edit out when she was having a lot of emotion in certain areas because  it was real. I can’t begin to imagine how difficult it must have been to not only write this, but then record the narration. Truly phenomenal.
