I didn't know anything about this actress before I listened to the audiobook (which she narrated herself, quite well I might add). She was pushed into acting by her abusive mother and their relationship was very toxic. I found it quite amusing the way the author described the absurdity of the entertainment industry and I commend her for the ability of being able to find humor in the situations with her mother too. She made it so that even though the story is quite sad it wasn't heavy to read at all. The book was moderately paced and equally balanced between plot and character, which is a good feat for a memoir in my opinion. Jeanette McCurdy did a great job writing this and I look forward to reading fiction from her next. Apparently she's working on a novel!

I really loved Jennettes's matter-of-fact writing style; it allowed for an authentic account of trauma and suffering without commodifying or detaching from it. The themes of loss, mental illness, and abuse were highly poignant and touching. I related to the pain a lot - it was very cathartic.

I listened to the audiobook, and it was so special to hear her read her own story, if incredibly difficult at times. I have enormous respect and admiration for her decision to share her story. I relate to parts of it, as I’m sure many people do. It’s full of a lot of the things we don’t say out loud.
Her reading voice is perfect—great pacing and flow, always with a deadpan kind of delivery. EXCEPT FOR near the end of the book, she breaks the flow for the first and only time, and you hear her trying not to cry. I cried with her. It made me think that there were probably a lot of takes they didn’t use.
Anyway, I’m so happy for the success of this, it’s so deserved.
