This memoir is the epitome of you truly never know what’s going on in someone else’s life.

While iCarly wasn’t a must-watch show for me, I still grew up around its fandom, especially having been a huge Drake & Josh fan. I knew who Jennette McCurdy was, Sam to Miranda Cosgrove’s Carly. The show was like every other Nickelodeon and Disney TV show at the time—silly, cheesy, mindless. I was much more obsessed with the careers of the Disney Channel teens, following Miley and Zac and the Jonas Brothers every move so I never paid much attention to Nick’s stars.

In recent years, however, as more came out about “The Creator”, as Jennette refers to him in her book, I started reading more and more into the behind-the-scenes at Nick. And of course, I heard whisperings about how Jennette was treated, and how crazy her mom apparently was.

Nothing can prepare you for what Jennette reveals in these pages. It’s insane and awful what all she went through at the hands of her own mother, and you would have never known it. Jennette writes her story with blunt honesty, not trying to sugarcoat. Only trying to convey how her feelings changed over the years toward her career and her family. She’s a great writer and storyteller, and I’m glad she got to a healthy point in her life to share everything. A very eye-opening autobiography that gives you a deep glimpse into the harsh reality of childhood stardom.

Textually, it is an easy read—contextually, it is emotionally difficult. I loved reading about her life, her experiences, her thoughts, and how she was simply a human trying to figure out who she was in the midst of family, fame, and fear.

A absolutely triggering but emotional masterpiece. Not a book you should read when you're in a bad headspace, but one that everyone should read. 5 stars. And fuck The Creator, Narrcisists, and Nickelodeon.

My feelings about this book are complicated to say the least, and deeply personal to say the most.

I’m very impressed by Jennette’s ability to share her story. She does it with an incredibly strong and unflinching voice. She is generous and poised despite the awful things she has endured at the hands of others and herself, and I like that her relationship with everything and everyone is complicated and authentic, including the relationship she describes with herself.

This book was weirdly triggering and healing. It really doesn’t pull any punches, especially if you find yourself relating to any aspects of her life that are particularly uncomfortable. It was hard to see aspects of my life mirrored in Jennette’s. It was also deeply comforting to see her progress, and hope for that for myself.

I’m really grateful for this book, and suspect it’s one I’ll revisit many times in years to come.

I do want to echo the general sentiment that you should be mindful of when and how you pick this book up, and that it’s okay to put it down and return to it when you feel ready.

Thanks for sharing this piece of yourself Jennette. It might be weird to say, but it really did mean a lot to be able to read this.
