What a horrible thing to do to a book!

A lovely story about a thoughtful boy who tries to find the perfect birthday gift for his mama and is repaid for the generosity he shows strangers. The illustrations are beautiful, too.

A sweet story with interesting artistic techniques for the illustrations. Alison Jay used alkyd paint and crackle varnish on thick cartridge paper to create a mosaic-like feel reminiscent of the cobblestone of Victorian-era/Belle Epoch Vienna.

In A GIFT FOR MAMA a kind young boy searches the streets of Vienna for the perfect birthday gift for his mother. When he sees a gorgeous yellow rose, he knows he has found the perfect gift for his mother, but a series of chance meetings cause the boy to trade away the rose and each gift he chooses to those in greater need. A beautifully illustrated read aloud story with lessons of kindness and love, A GIFT FOR MAMA is sure to enchant.
