A brilliant book, with an absorbing story, suitable for readers young and old, I will be passing it on to my Grandad next.

Although this is a children’s book I really enjoyed reading it! I’m using it as my next shared read with two home schooled children that I teach. Lots of great ideas for lessons and activities within the book.

Extremely solid historical fiction for kids/tweens. Emotional, hopeful, and with a clear underlying moral message of antifascism and acceptance of others.
Made me absolutely sob in the last quarter or so, though I admit I'm an easy crier.

Good: historical stuff I didn't know (adult refugees had to be smuggled, since UK closed their borders, interesting kindertransport and evacuation of kids from London details, personal gasmasks, etc).
Not great: The story didn't feel well thought out - a shame since it wouldn't have been that hard to strengthen.
