This book was charming and it meant a lot to me for personal reasons. It’s a product of its time, though still a relatable story. I loved the characters. I read it a few months ago and I’ve thought about them ever since.
Minor: Sexual content

I read Bird by Bird a couple of years ago and loved it, so I was excited to check out another Anne Lamott book. While I love the pure poetry of her writing, I had to really force myself to get through Blue Shoe. It took me awhile to keep the names of the characters straight because so many of them were not memorable. When I (finally) reached the end of the book, I felt as if I hadn't read a story as much as just a really long description of a group of emotionally wrecked people who were continuously hurting themselves and others, and never really reached any sort of closure. Overall, I was very disappointed with Blue Shoe.

This is one of those books that sat on my shelves for years. I always started it, then couldn't find my way in, and put it back on the shelf. Now I can say it found me at the right time. This book heavily features caregiving -- particularly caregiving for someone when the relationship is complex. I appreciated this book for the way that is unflinchingly, openly, and honestly examined.
Aesthetically, there were things I'd change about the book that kept me from reading it in the past, but the heart of the book was a narrative I needed and am grateful for.

I've lived 44 years and have been reading for 39 of them. This is the only book I've ever thrown in the trash.

I had a really hard time connecting to the writing and the characters in this book. I wanted to like it, but most of the time I wondered why I continued to read it. I will give another fiction book of hers a try, but perhaps I really only connect with her nonfiction.

I like Anne Lamott's nonfiction way better than her fiction. This was a fun read, but definitely not my favorite.
