This is the second book of the secret Kickstarter books. It is the only one of the three that is not cosmere related.
If you like the following, you will like this book:
Science fiction, time travel, Humor, magic, modern-day fiction, redemption stories
Our main character finds himself in a field after something clearly went wrong with the entry - what era? Where? What’s his name? Profession? There were some singed pages that came through with him but they got nabbed by some folks he quickly hid from.
On his way to collect his book, his medical nannites healed his scratches from the fall and his arm platings deflected an axe thrown at him… wait what?
This cute and funny redemption story follows our honored aelv, aka Ruinian, aka John, aka Johnny as he attempts to save the (a) world. I had trouble with it but it picks up speed around 55%. The ending was great and I’m glad I read it.
Interspersed with pages from the Frugal Wizard ™️ Manual, It is much shorter than any Sanderson book I’ve read and definitely a different feel from the Cosmere books but as always, Sanderson comes through with his characters. I am glad I read it and I would recommend it to someone who liked the above genres and story features.
“Oh hell. Was I a cosplayer? And why could I remember that word, but not my own name?”
“Yes, the Frugal Wizard™️ is capable and confident on their own, and does not need coddling.”
“I patted the tree I’d been hiding behind. ‘Thanks for the cover’ I whispered. ‘You’re a good tree. Tall, thick, —and most importantly—wooden.‘“
“Your life isn’t unremarkable. You are merely living in the wrong time.”
“I was tired — of being called — a coward. I was tired of believing it”
“Do not be ashamed of your joy.’ He told us, his voice intense. ‘Regardless of what aelv Ryan is, this is not a thing of shame. It is why I fight. It is why my sons bled. Never be ashamed of joy.’”
“Turns out, even a coward can save the world. So long as you leave him with no other options.”

Yea, it was fun! It had that Hitchhikers Guide meets Discworld kind of feeling. I read it quickly, but I found it pretty... forgettable? It was still good though.

It was sarcastic and fun! I wish I had the physical copy because the doodles in the margins that I have seen are beautiful.

Enough twists and turns to keep it very fun even after the nostalgic ´time travel books of my 80’s childhood n vibe wears off. The main character does some introspective personal work, which the author pulls off well. Is Sanderson even capable of writing a book that isn’t enjoyable ? So far, no.
