This book did too much telling and not enough showing for me. The conflict between Tobias and Tris was forced, unnecessary or predictable, with Tris (who is supposed to be smart!) obnoxiously repeating many of the same mistakes and being surprised when the outcome is, predictably, Not Nice. The author tried to explore the consequences of book 1 - admirable - but I wish she’d show us, somehow, and not rub it in through Tris’ inconsistent internal monologue without exploring the deeper layers. That said, the plot and pacing were great, and the ending worked up to a good climax that still makes me pick up book 3.
Graphic: Abandonment, Death of parent, Violence, Toxic relationship, War, Physical abuse, Death, Blood, Child abuse, Forced institutionalization, Murder, Panic attacks/disorders, Self harm, Suicidal thoughts, and Torture

My first 5 stars of the year, but I just had to! I Looooved this!!!! I just love love love tris and four so much I feel like a teenager again. It was nice that it was so different from the film as well because sometimes reading a book that’s like a play by play of a film can be boring. I did get a little bit confused with all of the characters at one point, I feel like there was nothing individual about some of them so I didn’t really feel a need to care when they died. But I loved this!! And I can’t wait for the next one.
