Very well written, and a unique story.

Knocks because I don't appreciate the character development of the narrator, because although she talks about atonement and being a better person, she only makes horrible decisions and goes back to her central flaw as a person.

A really good book, not my usual kind of story as it's ending if fairly sad knowing that they don't end up happy and together. It was only a quick read though, over in one day. Did have to skim a few confrontations because I am a wuss.

I really struggled to get into this at first. The prose is quite heavy at times and I couldn't quite see the thrust of McEwan's story (even though I have seen the film and knew what happens). But, once the "event" takes place I was hooked by its depth. This book is a harrowing reflection on the nature of personal responsibility, guilt and forgiveness - as well as the nature of storytelling.
