A sad book, but beautifully written, as is typical of Hartnett's writing. While certainly an intriguing read in many ways, I can't say I was overly impressed by The Midnight Zoo. While the storyline has the potential to leave readers thinking for hours after putting it down, like many of Hartnett's earlier novels do, it never succeeds in connecting the reader to the characters on an emotional level. The book reminded me vaguely of Pan's Labyrinth, but answered too many of the questions the film left open.
