This was quite good fun, and very readable. The epistolary form is very effective and made it a far quicker read than I think it would have been otherwise. The story itself is surprisingly funny and light; for me, the murder wasn’t really enough of a focus and the mystery was very underwhelming. The enjoyable part was seeing the dynamics of the Fairway Players unfold through the letters, really.

It was what it was – it was a fun read and fairly Christmassy, for what it was, but what felt original in The Appeal felt more than a little gimmicky in this one.

I liked how the audiobook book was done, but I would have liked more mysteries!!!

I enjoyed this read, zipping through it in less than a day. I thought there was a bit too much of the to-and-fro between Sarah-Jane and Celia at the start and the establishment of group dynamics. I felt my interest waning through these sections as I waited for some action. When it did come it was a fairly simple plot, but revived my interest.

I did enjoy the humour running throughout, and it was very vivid. Even with the format, a clear picture was created. I think it needed a bit more action earlier on and perhaps a sharper focus. It seemed to be too split between wanting to be a gentle character focused revisist of the group or a mystery.

I haven’t read The Appeal and it is true that this reads well as a stand-alone. It just wasn’t anything special to me, especially compared to Hallett’s other books. I actually thought this was quite predictable.
