I got this book as a gift from my little sister, who doesn’t really read books but raves about this one. I went into it not knowing at all what it was about, but by halfway through I was obsessed. The imagery is amazing, I can feel and smell the swamp, I can visualize the old North Carolina court house and a marsh girl. I enjoyed this book a lot, it’s the kind of book that’s easy to get lost in and it’s like a movie in your head, and that’s all I’m ever looking for from a fiction book. For an easy and enjoyable read, I’d highly recommend. As far as the story, the story was enjoyable, and has just enough twists to say it’s a bit unpredictable.

This is such a beautifully written book that I can’t recommend enough. I was completely hooked by the story and suspense that I couldn’t put it down and I was constantly thinking about this book when I wasn’t reading it. The ending is perfectly designed in my opinion and it brought me to tears in the best way. Everyone should read this book.

I listen to an audio version of this book so I can’t say anything about how it was written visually but from listening to the book the tension is well written, it also does a great job of portraying the main character’s emotions and motivations. It’s easy to understand the “why” in what the main character does. The book is well written, if a bit over written in some parts but I enjoy flowery writing. Outside of that scenes that were supposed to be uncomfortable were, I had to stop at a few points of the book and pick it up again later after I’d emotionally prepared myself.

A solid and captivating read for the first 2/3rds. As the climax and wind down kick in, it starts to get rather eye-rolly. Largely, this is because knowing anything about the author and her own alleged criminality drastically cheapens the experience. If one were to go into this completely blind on that manner, as many did upon release, this would certainly be a worthy 4/4.5 star book. The writing is solid, Owens' descriptions are as beautiful as they are informed, and each chapter knows just when and how to end to keep you reading. It really is good and I do recommend it. This being said, I bought my copy for $1 at a library sale and that's really the only way I would go about procuring it. Find it used and for cheap.

I enjoyed the setting of this book. The marsh was really beautifully described.

The theme of loneliness was my favourite part of this book. Maybe the plot was a bit over the top in terms of how realistic it was, but I don’t think that matters. If you’ve ever felt utterly alone, or ever feared that everyone you love will eventually leave you, you will probably find that aspect of the story relatable.

The big mystery wasn’t the best, I would have preferred a different ending but it was still ok. I kind of consider that just a side plot to the bigger story of Kya’s life.

I love the marsh as a setting and almost as a character. It provided rich descriptions and a useful plot tool. The dialogue didn’t always do it for me, but I do love Kya the girl-boss she is 🌾
