I enjoyed the first half of this book, with its strange, unsettling vibe and combination of melancholic and uplifting tone. There's an odd, wonderful mix of fascinating characters, and I particularly liked the parts set at Magnolia Court and the focus on how literature can create and hone community and togetherness and joy.
However, as the second half of the book progressed, I became more and more uncomfortable with Guylain's actions, and just cannot ignore how creepy and invasive and disrespectful the whole thing became - and this clearly wasn't the author's intention. In addition to this, there are also a couple of harmful comments about anorexia and autism. Despite its strong start, then, I unfortunately ended up really not liking this book, and wouldn't recommend it.
