The Talking Cat and Other Stories of French Canada, by Roger Duvoisin, Natalie Savage Carlson

This is a collection of tales that Carlson learned from her mother. How traditional they are, I’m not sure. Some of them are quite funny – such as the first story about a skunk that goes into an oven. All the stories are linked by characters. The title is quite good, despite being a trickster tale where the target is an old woman who lives alone. Carlson notes that it was okay because the trickster was a hard worker. There is a caution there.
