This confirmed for me that what I didn't like about Trail of Lightning wasn't necessarily the writing, but the genre. (Urban fantasy not always my thing)

I was immediately sucked in by the gripping opening scene.
Intricate world and complex characters.
Looking forward to the next book.

As the first novel in a series, “Black Sun“ by Rebecca Roanhoarse leads us into a fantasy world where four characters struggle to find their destiny, survive and bring change. There is no division between good and bad, Naranpa, Serapio, Xiala and Okoa are just complex, messy beings. Rarely, I’ve read a book where queerness is such an unexcitingly exciting part of the created world. I can’t wait for the second book to come out.

4.5 rounded up! This was truly fantastic, complete with all the elements of epic fantasy that I love, but done in such a gloriously fresh way. Reading it was such a rich experience, making me so thankful for the amazing books I’ve read lately that refuse to keep epic fantasy in the medieval-European-setting-only box, helping to expand and enrich the genre SO MUCH, as the wonderful Rebecca Roanhorse herself mentions in her acknowledgments. My only qualm is that this wasn’t longer!! It was so compulsively readable, which is always excellent, but set in a world so vividly imagined that I wouldn’t have minded trading some of that easy readability for more dense detail, if only to stay lost in it a little longer. But that just means there’s so much more to come, and I can’t wait!
