I know this is highly rated but I just didn't like the writing style. Found it impossible to get going...

What's really interesting about the book is the story behind it. The author, a Taiwanese lesbian writer, sadly took her own life before the book was published. You can feel that the writer poured a lot of her own feelings into the letters from the fictional narrator. It's sad but fascinating to see what was going on in someone's mind right before they decided to end their life.

The book consists of 20 letters that discuss the narators feelings following a difficult breakup. Most letters are addressed to Xu, but some appear to be addressed to her other lovers. It was a bit hard to understand which letters are addressed to who. Also it was ofen hard to read the book as most of the letters are quite repetitive, mostly having themes of obsessive love and thoughts about suicide. The storyline is also very vague, primarily revolving around the narrator's intense emotional turmoil and not a specific story.

Taiwanesisk litteratur i Parismiljö.

"For a moment during our phone call as it was snowing, as I realized the extent of our sorrow, I knew that I loved you so much it was like I was practically crying out: Here is the location of the soul I have cared for, and here is the source of all beauty and love, but how heavy, how painful, how heavy, how painful."
