I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I put it off for a long time because I was positive that I wasn't going to like it. I don't like westerns, I don't like guns as a primary weapon, there really wasn't anything indicating that I would enjoy it. Maybe it was because my expectations were so low, but I had a good time.

I didn't realize how much I missed the world of Mistborn and I forgot how much I love this magic system. While my least favorite thing about this book was the name Waxilliam, the character himself was extremely likeable, and I was drawn into his story immediately.

I should have had faith that if anyone could make me enjoy a flintlock fantasy, it would be Brandon Sanderson 💖

"The Alloy of Law" finally takes Mistborn into a new direction, 300 years after the events of "The Hero of Ages". This book has 2 huge advantages over the original trilogy: a cool Fantasy-Western setting, and far less teenage angst. Unfortunately it lacks a little in presenting an interesting narrative.

SpoilerWax is the new protagonist, alongside his partner Wayne. I really enjoy the new way to blend Allomantic and Feruchemetic powers in fun and interesting ways. Especially the newly discovered metals that allow the ability to slow and speed up time. Wayne was always a blast to read about and provided comedic relief. Wax is very much a "batman" type, with his double lives of being a Lord and a brooding vigilante. Miles had a very interesting power, but was less interesting to me as a villain. There were some interesting points made about how Wax's lifestyle as a Lawman was at odds with the ideals of the past Heroes. I wish this was explored more, because I often wondered at Wax's own justification of morality and how much it depended solely on what is written into law, rather than Kelsier's ideals of freedom regardless of the cost. Seeing the characters from the original trilogy be passed into historical legend was great, with the Church of the Survivor still in full swing, as well as the ever watching presence of Sazed as Harmony. I was also very surprised at the last minute reveal of Marsh still being around. I look forward to the rest of Era 2.

I didn’t love this as much as the original Mistborn trilogy, which I just finished, but I think it’s laying the groundwork for a bigger story that I’m going to enjoy. I liked the Wild West element—so fun to see the world and technology change!Â
