Gorgeous writing. Reading this felt like watching a stopmotion video of  a puzzle assembling - a dark, magical, surreal, puzzle that left imprints in my mind. It was an imaginative masterpiece. I’m so enamored with this world that Schwab created and the dynamic characters that fill it. I love these characters! I want to be them and fight them and love them and scream at them! This world came to life for me.

The book is full of characters consciously being compelled by magic to betray themselves, their families, friends and  countries against their will. Sometimes the magic is worked via non-concentual kissing. Very disturbing.

A lovely romp through multiple Londons, similar to, but not the same as, Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere. Super exciting and felt like a very well done HBO mini series in the best way possible :)
Planning on reading the sequels at some point!

okay. But like. Lila is also obviously an Antari, right? Her human parents just assumed her eye died or something and had it removed when she was young, right?

A bit slow to get going, but the final third was jam packed with action.

A fun jaunt through time and space, where a magician picks up a thief on his way to protect his beloved royal family. There's partially found family vibes, and I keep imagining the pansexual prince as an AU Dragon Prince kind of sassy guy. Looking forward to book two, I loved the use of magic! If you're listening to audiobook, the narrator Loves to do this guttural magicky growl for every spell incantation.
