Very enjoyable. Unexpectedly complex for young readers. The story moves very quickly and a lot happens in a short space. I wasn't thrilled with the ending. A lot if details were left unresolved in a way that did not feel satisfactory. Also I would have liked a little more development of the themes. Overall, enjoyable read though.

This book was amazing. I don't like to read books over again -- I'm already looking forward to reading this book again. Share with your kids... share with your students. The audio-version was fantastic and would make a great car trip book.

Fantasy is not my thing (sometimes too much description, not enough action). I found this a little frustrating in its fits and starts. I did like that Oscar realized that things are not always what they seem, and there were some plot twists.

I wanted to like this a lot more than I did. liked what she tried to do with the characters, and the core "magic vs non-magic for problem solving" question. But I felt unsatisfied at the end, like there were still gaps to fill, and there were some pretty dark moments for a kids book, which took me by surprise at first and left a bad taste in my mouth as I kept reading.
